The MC68881 is a separate chip designed to perform floating point operations in hardware. This chip is primarily designed for use with the 020 or 030 which support this chip in microcode or can be used with the 68000 or 010 by generating a software trap. The 68881 can either run at the same clock speed as the CPU or has support for using it's own clock signal. The 68881 has some ability to run certain FPU operations simultaneously with CPU execution. 68881's are found in Amiga's up to a maximum clock speed of 20Mhz.
